Kuusi vuotta
2015, Liero
”Tänä kesänä me tehdään sitten vaikka mitä”, Liisa hihkuu puhelimeen, ja jossain taustalla Janna sanoo.
”Joo, mennään uimaan heti huomenna!”
”Se vesi on varmasti ihan jääkylmää”, mä yritän vastustella. Me kuitenkin mennään, ja vaikka mä olen oikeassa, meillä on hauskaa.
2016, Englanti
”Hi, you must be Anna?” Mies mun takana on nuori, eikä varmasti kolmilapsisen perheen isä Peter, jonka piti hakea mut.
”Yes, I am”, vastaan suomiaksentillani ja blondi hymyilee mun hämmentyneelle olemukselle.
”Good! I’m Jess and here to pick you up, Peter send me. He had some trouble with the girls and I was around so I just drove here instead of him”, nyökkään vähän eksyneesti ja varoitusmerkkien vilkkuessa mielessäni annan Jessin ottaa laukkuni.
Ensimmäinen kuukausi Englannissa on raskas.
”Hi! Can Haley stay with you and the girls today? I can’t reach Clara and I really should be going by now”, Jess soittaa mulle rutiinin omaisesti taas tänään. Vähintään kerran viikossa Haleyn äiti on jossain teillä tietämättömillä ja Jess jättää lapsen mun hoidettavaksi.
”Yeah, sure! We are going to the mall to buy some new clothes later today, but if you just pick her pack up before four it should be fine”
”Thanks, you are an angel! I promise this is the last time, really”, mun sydän läikähtää, kun kuulen Jessin hymyilevän puhelimen läpi.
Se ei ole viimeinen kerta. Kuukautta myöhemmin Haley on taas mulla hoidossa, ja kun Jess tulee hakemaan tyttärensä, Kate huutaa olohuoneesta
”You young people should really get out more”. Mä naurahdan, koska Kate on kuus vuotta Jessiä vanhempi.
”Well, I would need someone to babysit Haley”, Jess huutaa takaisin.
”Just go, I will watch her tonight”, Katen ääni on iloinen, kun se käytännöllisesti katsoen työntää meidät ulos.
”She left. Last night. I think she isn’t coming back this time”, on kaikki mitä Jess sanoo kesäkuun aamuna puhelimessa. Ei tervehdi, menee vain suoraan asiaan.
”Oh, do you need me to take Haley here? I could, the twins are camping with Peter and I am going to the zoo with Kayla”
”No. I just… wanted to tell”
”Oh”
”We could come with you, though. If that’s ok?”
Me vietetään päivä kylpien auringossa ja katsoen kirahveja.
”I have these concert tickets and I thought… Well, do you want to come? It’s this saturday”. Mä hymyilen Jessille autossa, vaikka lapset haluavat jo takaisin kotiin syömään. Jessillä on hyvä musiikkimaku ja mulla on vapaapäivä lauantaina.
”Sure”.
Konsertti on ihana, mutta illan kohokohta on kotimatka läpi kesäisen kaupungin. Yllättäen Jess ottaa mua kädestä ja ajaa meidät mun väliaikaisen kodin sijaan pienelle puistolle. Me istutaan siellä, lämpimässä kesäyössä tähtien alla ja puhutaan.
”Anna, I want to kiss you.” Ja sitten se suutelee mua.
”Stay here, don’t go back”, Jess kuiskaa mun korvaan.
”But I don’t have a job here, I can’t just stay”.
”We will find you a job. And you don’t have a job in Finland either. You have said you have nothing there, so why go home? You could have everything here”, mä epäröin ja katson häntä.
”
We could have everything”.
2017, Still in England
”Nice to have you here”, Peter smiles at me.
”I like it here”, mä naurahdan nostellessani viimeisen laatikollisen tavaraa ulos Katen ja Peterin autosta ja katsoessani, kuinka Jess kävelee kohta kolmevuotiaan Haleyn perässä läpi pihan. Haley huutaa ja syöksyy mun luo.
”Ana”, she screams in exitement.
”Hi to you too”, mä nauran tytölle pörröttäen sen ruskeita hiuksia. Samana iltana Jess vetää mut sen syliin sen olohuoneen sohvalla.
”This is all ours now. If you want to change anything in the house, just tell me”. I smile and kiss him. The place is beautiful but undoutably I would maybe want to paint the one bedroom with the hideous green walls.
The bedroom walls are now, two months later, muted lavender, and Haley loves it. It will probably be her new bedroom after we get the chance to paint another layer.
”I’m home!” Jess yells downstairs.
”Did you bring the food?” Mä kysyn ja Jess hymyilee heilutellen pussia.
”Thanks”, sanon ja nappaan pussin juosten olohuoneeseen. Olisi mun vuoro valita parhaan päältä kun Haleykin on nukkumassa.
”Hey!” Jess yells and sprints after me. And after all, we don’t eat the food that night.
In the summer Jess gets a promotion. With him now works a man that is also from Finland. In the eighteen months, my Finnish has gotten terrible.
Me jutellaan pitkään Jessin yrityksen juhlissa, mutta illan päätteeksi on melkein helpotus päästä palaamaan puhumaan englantia.
”You got along well”, Jess jokes around and I laugh. It is so easy with him. We just have fun. I handle Haley and the house working part-time with other children, he works.
”Yeah, unfortunately for me he is gay”, I joke back.
”Oh well, you just need to stick with me then”. I kiss Jess. We are happy.
Me on oltu yhdessä vasta vuosi, mutta me ollaan nuoria ja rakastuneita.
”Would you marry me if I asked?” Jess looks at me and I can tell, he is not kidding around.
”Of course”, I say matter of factly and he grins in relief. The next evening he comes home with the rings. He knows I don’t want anything big. We go out and eat while Haley is at his grandparents. I hope that someday Haley could have siblings.
”Mom! Mom!” Haley comes running in the room.
”Yes, sweetie?” I ask and go help her with the Legos. Jess is looking at us from the door, leaning in the lavender wall. Eventually, Haley goes to nap and Jess pulls me into his arms.
”You are so good with her, thank you”. And from that day on I am a mother to Haley in everything but law's eyes.
2018, Family
Haley, Kayla, Laura, and Lily are pretty in their dresses. They are running around me filled with anxiety-driven excitement. Laura worries about falling while walking and her sister tells her that she is an idiot. No one will be looking at them because they should be looking at me. I laugh it off and tell them that no, the family wants to see them too but that it is okay if they fall. Inside I am nervous wreck not helped by the wedding buzz around me. By the end of the day, I feel the happiest I have ever been.
It is the summer and I feel like there is no air left in the bathroom so burst out into the living room. Jess hugs me. He doesn’t need to ask, he just holds me there. Four years old Haley is upstairs playing with cars. She wouldn’t get a sibling this time either.
”Maybe I should see a doctor?”
”Maybe you should”, Jess echoes and promises that he will get me an appointment. Now he goes upstairs, gets Kayla, and gives us both ice cream. I eat mine with keeping the tears in for Haley, but at night they come.
The doctor looks at me and I know. Her eyes are full of pity.
”You can’t have children… ”, the explanation goes on and on. I am just thinking about how I don’t want to tell all of this to Jess. We wanted children so badly. But he understands. Of course, he does, he always does. Sometimes I wonder if I could do anything that could make him mad.
”We have Haley. And there are options”, he says while comforting me. The very next week he comes home with a gorgeous chocolate lab puppy. Haley names it Fazer, thinking of the chocolate my half-brothers sometimes send us. Fazer becomes part of our family and my workmates' joke that we have everything. An amazing kid, beautiful dog, and lovely house. I smile and thank them, feeling like something is still missing.
I am reading a novel. A Finnish one. Sometimes Jess asks me to read to him in Finnish. I don’t understand but I read. So we sit in the backyard and I read. Fazer is playing with Haley and one of the last summer days flies by. I stop to look at the play.
”You are still hoping, aren’t you?”
”Yea”
”Maybe we could look into adopting?” I agree and go back to reading. The butterflies are flying through my stomach at lights speed when I dream about Haley having someone to play with. Sibling, not a dog.
We don’t look into adoption that year. Jess gets promoted again and becomes busier and busier. I am still in my part-time job, feeling like I don’t even have the skills to do much else. But I love it at home, although it pains me to walk beside the empty guest bedroom. It would have been a perfect nursery. Every time I remind myself that I have a beautiful family.
2019 - 2020, Work work work
”Sorry, I need to work late again”, a tired voice says and I try to sound like it doesn’t bother me. Even though this is our date night and I have just driven Haley to Kate and Peter's house to spend the night. This is the third time just this week. I don’t know what to say.
”Well, we can do something together this weekend”
”Yeah, let’s do that”, Jess says. But we don’t. He goes away for a surprise work trip. I take Haley and Kayla to the zoo even though it is just February and still freezing outside. Laura and Lily have decided that at the mature age of eleven they are too old to go there. The giraffe pen is empty and Kayla says it’s fine, she doesn’t like giraffes anymore anyway. Haley sees some ponies and tries to run to them. Picture of Liero's last moments flashes in front of me. I don’t want to see the horses, so I distract the kids with popcorn and puppies.
The spring goes like that. Jess says he is going to be home but he isn’t. I say it is fine, do something with my friends from work or Haley. We start agility with Fazer and he loves it. Although he isn’t very good at it with maybe the shortest attention span of all time. When Jess is home we have fun as always. I still have hope left. He just needs to his career started well. That is what he said, that next year everything would be okay again. I believe him.
We have an amazing summer vacation. I visit Finland first time in years, this time with my family. Haley loves it and Jess is as fascinated with everything as she is. We stay with my dad. He says that he is sad that we are so far away, his house is empty and he hopes we could visit more often. Of course, he has to speak to my family through me, his knowledge of English is minimal. We tour the usual touristy places and I take Jess to see some places you wouldn’t go as a tourist normally. We have a good time and after the vacation, I am as in love as when we first started dating.
But the autumn comes and Jess’s work starts again. And so starts the spring feelings all over again. A new year rolls around but it doesn’t really change anything. Jess tells me he knows and just to trust him, it will get better. But I think deep down I know it wouldn’t get any better when the passing touches, loving words, and long looks started to fade from our everyday lives. By the summer I was feeling lonelier than ever in England, but the summer came and swept me right back to the happy days. And through that winter I was carrying on with the memories from summer. Maybe it really could get better.
2021 – Passive love
The last summer with Jess was something. It was so happy, so blissful and so beautiful. We were so in love it hurt. More than that, hurt the knowledge that this couldn’t last. I had seen it so many times and I didn’t have hope anymore.
I felt like our love had become passive. It had been part of us so long, that we couldn’t just let go. It was still there waiting for the right place and right time, bubbling under the surface. But over the years we had picked up other things. I had my hidden sadness, he had his work. The right time would not come. Not before we would both be broken and sad. That last summer I saw it. We still had the love, but it was hidden and waiting. Lingering under the surface, not getting through, and hurting us both.
It was the last perfect summer day. We were sitting on the porch and Haley was already sleeping with his new enormous stuffed dog. The sun was setting and I couldn’t carry on anymore. There, in Jess’s arms, I started to sob. He looked at me, worry on his face. I think he knew at that moment. We weren’t going to get this fixed.
Jess kissed me last time that night.
The months I had to spend in the house after that were painful ones. In October I flew back to Finland. I ran from my problems and left. Got a job in a store, moved to my grandmother's old mökki. Sopeuduin uudelleen puhumaan suomea, aloin tutustua uusiin ihmisiin. Jess hasn’t really spoken with me since, but Haley texts me photos of them all the time. She asks when she can visit her mum and it hurts like hell. I am not her real mum, not in the way it matters. I don’t have any claim after the divorce and I just tell her to wait. Maybe dad will let her visit someday.
25.04.2022 – Reunion?
Puhelin soi. Jess. Sekuntiakaan miettimättä vastaan, peläten että Haleyllä on jotakin vialla.
”Hi, sorry to call you like this but Haley really wants to see you. She hasn’t stopped talking about that in weeks”. Jess sounds like Jess, but with a nervous edge.
”Oh, hi, yea I know, she texts all the time”, I am trying to stay calm.
”It is her birthday next month”, Jess says as if I as her almost-mother wouldn’t know her birthday.
”I know”
”Oh… well, yea, of course, you know”, the silence is killing me slowly.
”… So?”
”Can we come to Finland? At the end of May, I could get a vacation and she can miss a few days of school”, I feel like the air in my lungs has been sucked out. I look around me in the mökki.
”Please?” Jess pleads and I feel the warmth. Like in the old days.
”Okay. Just… text me, ok?”
”Thanks. Really thanks”, the line cuts off and I sit in my home alone. Missing my family.
